Food loss due to the lack of a proper cold chain results in income loss and unnecessary carbon emissions. BASE, the Basel Agency for Sustainable Energy, together with Empa, the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Material Science and Technology, have rolled out an innovative digital solution enabling smallholder farmers to better adapt to the negative impacts of climate change.
By using data science and business model innovation, the Your Virtual Cold Chain Assistant solution aims to reduce food waste by providing smallholder farmers with access to clean, decentralised cold storage, and by upcycling market intelligence via a mobile application, Coldtivate. BASE and Empa are currently rolling the project out in India and in Nigeria in partnership with local clean technology companies.

Your VCCA has worked with five technology providers offering highly efficient solar-powered cold storage solutions in the agricultural sector. The Incubator Program helped companies integrate servitisation and digitalisation in their cold room offerings to add momentum to their efforts to reduce the level of post-harvest losses and empower smallholders.
