Catalyst Programme

WHAT IS THE
YOUR VCCA
CATALYST PROGRAMME?

Without cold storage, farmers and petty traders are often forced to sell their harvest quickly at low prices, or watch it spoil. A cold room can change this reality, but only if cooling users trust it, can afford it, and keep using it. The Your VCCA Catalyst Programme helps organisations that build, run, or support cold rooms at every stage: from assessing the feasibility of a first cold room to tackling problems in existing ones, such as finding buyers. Participants work with the Your VCCA team in 1-1 sessions and use learning material, pricing tools, and Coldtivate, the open-source mobile application Your VCCA developed for managing cold rooms. The programme also supports software companies that want to adapt Coldtivate, build on it, and offer it as their own product. Together, the Programme helps catalyse change in two steps. First, participants who want to rethink their modus operandi get expert guidance, tools, and training to make cold storage more affordable, well-run, and trusted by farmers. Then what they learn helps other cold storage businesses do the same.

HOW IT WORKS

To apply for the Your VCCA Catalyst Programme, you fill in a questionnaire about your organisation, your cold room operations or software product, and the kind of support that would help you most. The Your VCCA team reviews applications weekly. If you are a fit, the team sets up an introductory call to define together how to organise support across three pillars, to: A. strengthen your business model and governance, and secure demand for your cold rooms; B. digitalise operations with the Coldtivate application, or run your own version of it; and C. provide training and materials to train cold room operators and raise awareness among farmers.

The support activities, session frequency, and duration (up to six months) are tailored to your needs and agreed during the introductory call. The goal is to design and implement a plan that allows you to test new strategies (or, for software companies, your own version of Coldtivate), collect feedback from cold room operators and users, and improve how cold rooms are managed and used, one step at a time. At the end of the programme, you have a plan tested in practice and the tools to keep improving on your own. The programme also gives participants visibility: Your VCCA showcases your work on its communications channels and introduces you to its network of partners active in cold storage. Your experience then serves as a reference for other cold storage implementers facing similar challenges, and software companies commercialising Coldtivate can connect with potential first customers among cooling implementers in their region.

WHO CAN APPLY?

The programme targets two groups of organisations:

  • Cold room organisations: companies deploying or looking to deploy an as-a-service business model in agricultural cold chain (cold storage and logistics services), and ecosystem builders and organisations engaged with farmer communities operating cold rooms.
  • Software companies: companies interested in adopting or further developing Coldtivate, Your VCCA’s free, open-source mobile application

Not sure if this is for you? Fill in the questionnaire anyway, and the Your VCCA team will come back to you after its review.

SUPPORT PILLARS AND KNOWLEDGE SHARING

1

Pillar A: Business model, governance and securing demand

A cold room has to earn enough to cover its costs. This pillar helps you build a business model around a pricing strategy that balances what cooling users can afford with what the cold room needs to run sustainably. Clear governance supports it, with defined roles and responsibilities, including who owns and operates the cold room and how revenue is shared. You also explore how to establish links with buyers and institutional offtakers, and how these links secure demand and strengthen the model. You finish with a draft business plan and clear next steps, and share your experience to help other cold storage businesses build their own.

2

Pillar B: The Coldtivate application

Coldtivate is a free, open-source mobile application developed by the Your VCCA team to digitalise operations at cold rooms. It records every crate that comes in and goes out of the room, and tells cooling users how many days their produce will stay fresh, so they can plan when to sell. As part of this pillar, the team helps you get started with the application, develops an adoption plan, and regularly reviews the progress. If you are a software company interested in self-hosting, the team guides you over the most important steps to help you run and commercialise your own version. By the end, your team uses Coldtivate to operate your cold rooms or, as a software company, you have a plan to run your own version. By sharing how you use Coldtivate, or your own version of it, you give other companies a practical example to follow.

3

Pillar C: Training material and modules

Cooling users need to trust a cold room before they use it. This pillar provides training and materials to the people in your organisation who train cold room operators and conduct farmer and vendor training. Operator training includes sessions on how to optimise multi-commodity storage and digitally manage cold rooms with Coldtivate, and farmer training is centred around engaging awareness-raising activities and material tested in the field. By the end, you have ready-made comics, training material, and videos in multiple languages to explain the benefits of cooling to farmers, and, if you adopt Coldtivate, trainers certified to teach it. Sharing your training approach and its results then helps other cold storage businesses build trust with their own cooling users.

4

Bringing it all together: Sharing what you learn

Your experience in the programme can help other companies facing similar challenges. When you join, Your VCCA introduces your organisation on its comms channels. Once your engagement ends, it features your experience through short profiles and posts and selected participants are invited to contribute to case studies or video testimonials. This gives your organisation visibility and helps you connect with other companies and partners working on cold storage. Nothing is published without your approval.
